Pros and Cons of Welfare

Welfare is the health, happiness, and the fortunes of a person or a group of people. It is a government-sponsored program for individuals and groups regarding family needs such as health care assistance, provision of foodstuffs and unemployment compensation. The programs are funded through taxation.

It protects and promotes the economic and social well-being of citizens. It is based on the principles of equal opportunities, equal distribution of wealth, and public responsibility for citizens who are unable to avail themselves of the minimal provisions of goods.

  1. It reduces the risk of societal collapse

Welfare allows its members to be insured against catastrophes. This makes the society to continue even after the eventuality happens as they will be compensated by the insurance firm and they will be able to continue with their lives again.

Those families that are in poverty, welfare programs are able to ensure that they get access to health facilities and food in order for them to live well hence reducing the mortality rate due to the inadequacy of food and health facilities.

There will not be income inequality in the society which may render the gap between the poor and the rich to widen hence discrimination when it comes to the provision of other services.

As the welfare programs provide the essentials to the people who are unable to get them hence the poverty levels will reduce in society.

Like in the United States, there is a possibility of some states offering the welfare programs and others do not offer. There is no guarantee that the states should offer welfare programs hence the services are variable.

The programs should be able to identify the root cause of poverty in the area so that they may deal with it hence leaving the society to depend on itself in the future.

The programs can increase the number of dependency in the society and this may make the burden of the government to be high as they will be required to meet the needs of the members of the society.

Some people may abuse the privilege and take advantage of the programs which may be a cost to the taxpayers hence abusing the privilege.

The program does not support everyone fully. There is to an extent to which the society supports the individuals and this makes them not to be able to meet their needs fully.

The corporations may decide to pay fewer wages to their workers as the benefits from the programs depend on the amount of income a family has hence exploiting the workers know that they may benefit from the welfare programs.


Welfare programs are to balance the needs of a household having enough to meet their basic needs in life while developing skills to make the beneficiaries to be dependent in the future. The programs are to equip the beneficiaries with the skills so that it reaches a time in life when they can meet their own needs.
