Pros and Cons of Gmos

GMOs are any organism whose genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering techniques. In the field of agriculture, it has been used to increase crop production, reduced need for pesticide, enhanced nutrient composition and food quality, resistance to pests and diseases and greater food security.

Some of the characteristics that result from altering the genes can be desirable and others can be harmful to the organism that is intended to use the product.

Pros and Cons of Gmos

Pros of GMOs

  1. More nutritious food

The genes can be altered and come up with food that is more nutritious and healthy to animals hence most people are going for the technique.

  1. Faster growing plants and animals

Most people prefer crops that grow faster and they may adopt the system as they will be sure of getting the harvest fast which may curb things such as famine.

  1. Reduced cost of food

As the plants will grow at a faster rate, there will be reduced cost of food as the supply will be high hence the people enjoy a lot of food throughout.

  1. Reduction in the use of pesticides

Using many pesticides affects both animals and the environment. Reduced in the usage of pesticides will make farming not pollute the air and the water bodies and the food that is produced as a result will not contain a lot of pesticides hence it will not be harmful to the animals using it.

  1. Introduction of disease-resistant and drought-resistant crops

This will make the farmers spend less of the maintaining of the crops and they will fight against the diseases themselves. The plants that are resistant to drought will enhance the constant supply of food hence people will not die of hunger.

  1. Tastier food

Some food that is produced from GMOs is tastier than the original food hence a lot of people will prefer to use the tastier one.

  1. Medicinal food

The food that has medicinal value will be used as vaccines against certain diseases and this will increase the life expectancy of the animals consuming it reduces the amount of money to be used in curing of certain diseases.

  1. Production of food with more desirable traits

Some foods have desirable traits in that they are considered to be less of cancer viruses are needed by human beings as they will save human beings from contacting the deadly disease.

  1. Environmental friendly

Some of the crops use little water to grow and they emit a low amount of carbon dioxide in the air hence they are preferred as they will save the human beings from diseases that may be caused by carbon dioxide emissions and drought.

Cons of GMOs

  1. They can be harmful to the environment

Some crops need a lot of pesticides for them to survive and this may lead to a lot of pollution as the fumes will be full in the air and some of it will be carried rainwater into the rivers and consumed directly by animals which may be harmful to their health.

  1. The toxins in the food may trigger allergic reactions in human beings

The toxins that are introduced into the food for them to grow fast may later on the harm the human beings and other animals by triggering the allergic reactions which may turn out to be costly to treat.

  1. The food is not safe for consumption through clinical trials

Most of the GMOs’ food has not been clinically proven to be safe for human consumption so sum may contain substances that do not need to be consumed by human beings.

  1. Antibiotic resistance

The food may contain substances that resist antibiotics and this may make it difficult to be killed hence they may affect the health of a human being once consumed.

  1. Some may contain cancer virus

Some of the food that is produced as a result of altering the genetic make-up may contain a cancerous virus which is a deadly disease and this may lead to the death of human beings.

  1. Harmful genetic changes

The food may carry harmful genes that will change the genetic make-up of human beings once consumed and this may make the human body not to be able to fight against the diseases which may at times lead to the death of human beings.

  1. Some of the foods are not nutritious

Some food may just be produced to satisfy the hunger in human beings but not carrying any nutritional content hence they will not be useful to human beings when consumed.

  1. Transfer of non-genetically engineered genes

Some genes may move from one plant to another or from one animal to another that is not genetically tested hence they will not be compatible which may end up risking the life of the animal or plant.

GMOs are good but they need to be tested before they are allowed to be consumed by human beings or other animals to ensure that they carry the right amount on the required nutrients and they are not carrying any genes that can be dangerous to human health or other animal’s health when consumed.
